I. Overview

Author: Susun S. Weed.
Introduction by Jean Houston. 312 pages, index, illustrations by Durga Bernhard and Alan McKnight
ISBN: 0961462027 Retails for $21.95

Cited as the "best book on the female-intuitive approach to health," this book discusses, compares, and gives examples of the Scientific, Heroic, and Wise Woman traditions of healing.

In addition, it contains monographs on seven herbs -- burdock, chickweed, dandelion, nettle, oats, seaweed, violet -- including: the voice of the plant, a weed walk to harvest the plant, uses of the plant in plain language, easy to follow instructions for making your own herbal remedies, recipes for beauty, garden, kitchen, and medicine chest. Includes info on how to make herbal preparations.

This book was conceived by Ms. Weed when, meditating at the cairn of her favorite goat (Penelope), who had recently died, she saw the outline of the book explaining her philosophy of healing and her teachings in dancing green letters before her eyes.
When the manuscript got too big, it was broken into two parts: Healing Wise (published in 1989) and Healing Well (to be published in 2003). Healing Wise is used as a required text in college-level classes on herbal medicine. Published in German as Heil Weise, in two parts.

Ash Tree Publishing
was founded in 1985 to reweave the healing cloak of the Ancients and to make the Wise Woman Tradition available to modern women. The information gathered in Ash Tree books offers women simple, easy, successful, and safe ways to regain and maintain health.

Sample Review:
What a powerful book! It has changed the way I feel towards modern medicine, the chaos in my life, and even my backyard. The seven featured common weeds are given voices and distinct personalities. For instance, dandelion speaks from this book with a charming and joyous French accent. My medicine cabinet has fewer pharmaceuticals these days and an increasing assortment of odd little bottles of tinctures, oils, and salves that I have had great fun making from plants I have found within walking distance of my home. The voice of Wise Woman wisdom rings throughout this book and I find myself turning to this book for solutions to my various discomforts instead of calling the doctor.

III. Market

Many herbals offer a little information about a lot of herbs. Healing Wise is the herbal that offers a lot of information about seven herbs (or weeds, if you will). Even experienced herbalists don't use hundreds of herbs; they develop relationships with a few.
This book encourages you to do the same: to invite into your life the common plants that grow near you. You'll be amazed at their power to heal your woes and keep you healthy.
