Supporting the Emotional Needs
of Mom and Baby During Pregnancy

by: Jill D. Chasse
mentor, Wise Woman School

The child growing in your womb may not be able to see the outside world, but he or she is an active participant in life. the Art of Shakaya Leone A baby in the womb feels, hears, and moves in rhythm to his mother's voice from within the amniotic sac. Studies have shown that babies are able to recognize familiar voices, such as dad's, remember songs, and prefer stories that they have heard while growing in the womb. From the womb he is learning to perceive life.

The womb is a nurturing environment itself, but the emotions of the mother, both negative and positive, reflect directly on the baby's state of mind and being. Because of the intensity of this direct relationship, it is important to act in a positive manner. This means, not only eating well, and treating your physical body well, but also being emotionally secure and happy, while providing your child loving affirmations, warm thoughts, and daily communication. This insures trust and love into the unborn child and starts the special relationship that will last throughout the lives of both mother and child.
Communication with your child stimulates brain activity.

Here’s an activity you can try to help with this vital development:

Spend 30 minutes to an hour today getting in touch with your child. Close your eyes and picture his or her little body swimming around in your womb.
With your hand on your belly, express your dream, desires, and wishes for your child (I am looking forward to holding you in my arms, I can see your beautiful little button nose in my dreams, I can't wait to nurse you, etc.)

For a developing child, acknowledgement and love is crucial. Continue this special time throughout your pregnancy and well into your baby’s childhood. This special time will give you an escape from the pressures of the world, and an opportunity to build your relationship together.

Remember that emotions are a form of communication. The attention that a parent pays to his or her child increases the security that child feels and leads to the development of trust, self, and independence. Supporting the emotional needs of both yourself and your baby, with simple exercises, communication, bonding and love will have positive effects that last a lifetime.
